Prayers and Meditations (Guide Lost Souls Home)

Prayers and Meditations (Guide Lost Souls Home)

Braving the chaos
of suburban  streets
and highway crossings
            walking with purpose
towards the tranquil haven
of the river-walk
I rounded a bend
which takes me to my bush-path along the river…

Footsteps slowed as eyes took in
an unexpected scene
- a score of police cars and SES vehicles
groups of uniformed personnel
blockading the path
            my heart beat fast
before sinking like a rock into murky water
this did not bode well, I could tell…
… polite inquiry uncovered the reason
for the official assembly –
an elderly gentleman, missing, whereabouts unknown…
… I was allowed to pass, and promised to watch as I wandered;

As I walked on, along the river edge
I sent my thoughts out into the Universe
that he return safely to his loved ones…

… verdant green in ripples reflected
on still, dark water
I felt a little sick
what if, whatif whatif…
but shaking off the feeling of dread
I prayed again for the man’s safety…

A kingfisher posing on sunken log
lifted my spirits a little
and I wandered on, pausing
at a favorite bench beneath the canopy of intertwined trees
breathing in the peaceful scene
- river littered with fallen leaves
browning, yellowed… some vibrant red
a patchwork of seasons blanketed the Earth…

Whip birds in full song, a harmony
of pristine notes
            momentarily drowned out
by the harsh wail of a siren
again my heart burst into rapid-beat
as I renewed my fervent prayer
for that lost soul to be returned
to his loved ones…

I walked on, along the overgrown river bank
peering into dense clumps
and thickets of razor grass
pausing at places
to drink in
the essence of Nature…
… willy wagtails played on the path ahead of me
cavorting with hyperactive energy
kookaburra chuckled as a water dragon
launched itself off a mid-stream log…
… I felt my inner child smile;

I turned then, retracing my steps
over leaf-fall, feet reluctant to walk too fast
until at last
the end of the tree-lined path
loomed ahead…
…  glimpses of busy road
and SES grouped by a table
cluttered with walkie-talkie’s
and refreshments…
… I paused again, hesitant to ask
- has he been found…
            no, not yet

And again I gave my thoughts to the Universe
… please, guide this lost soul
 and all lost souls
back to a place of safety;
